Wholesale Vehicle Auction Soften

Wholesale values continued to soften last week, with the overall market declining -0.48%, broadly consistent with the prior week’s -0.51% decrease. Cars fell -0.39%, while Trucks/SUVs declined -0.51%, with depreciation broadening across most segments and accelerating for Compact Cars, Full-Size Pickups, and mainstream Full-Size Crossovers/SUVs. Auction activity remained healthy, with strong sell-through rates and active online bidding, but pricing was increasingly selective.

Car Segments

  • On a volume-weighted basis, the overall Car segment decreased -0.39%. For reference, in the previous week, cars decreased -0.29%.
  • The 0-to-2-year-old Car segments were down -0.15% and 8-to-16-year-old Cars decreased -0.21%.
  • Eight of the nine 2-to-8-year-old car segments declined last week, compared with just two declining segments among 0-to-2-year-old vehicles and one among 8-to-16-year-old vehicles.
  • Premium Sporty Car values edged back into positive territory last week, increasing +0.04% and marking the segment’s fourth weekly gain in the past six weeks. Performance was relatively stable across all age groups, with 0-to-2-year-old vehicles rising +0.03% and 8-to-16-year-old vehicles slipping just -0.01%.
  • Compact Car depreciation accelerated last week, with values declining -0.72% compared with -0.23% the previous week. In contrast, 0-to-2-year-old and 8-to-16-year-old Compact Cars continued to experience much more modest depreciation.

Truck / SUV Segments

  • The volume-weighted overall Truck segment decreased -0.51% compared to the decrease seen the prior week of -0.58%.
  • The 0-to-2-year-old models saw an average decrease of -0.34% and the 8-to-16-year-old models experienced an average decrease of -0.43%.
  • Declines were broad across the 2-to-8-year-old Truck segments, with all thirteen posting value losses last week. None of the 0-to-2-year-old or 8-to-16-year-old Truck segments recorded value gains.
  • Full-Size Crossovers/SUVs continued to depreciate at an accelerating pace, with 2-to-8-year-old mainstream models declining -0.53% last week. That brought the segment’s four-week average decline to -0.46% per week. In contrast, Full-Size Luxury Crossovers/SUVs showed a sharp improvement, with depreciation slowing to -0.24% from -1.06% the previous week.
  • Full-Size Pickup values have declined for eleven consecutive weeks, averaging -0.38% per week. Last week’s -0.74% decline was the segment’s steepest single-week drop since mid-December of last year.
