Retail Sales Rise Less than Expected

Advance estimates of U.S. retail and food services sales for May 2024, adjusted for seasonal variation and holiday and trading-day differences, but not for price changes, were $703.1 billion, up 0.1% (±0.4%)* from the previous month, and up 2.3% (±0.5%) above May 2023. Total sales for the March 2024 through May 2024 period were up 2.9% (±0.5%) from the same period a year ago. The March 2024 to April 2024% change was revised from virtually unchanged (±0.4%) to down 0.2% (±0.2%).

Retail trade sales were up 0.2% (±0.4%) from April 2024, and up 2.0% (±0.5%) above last year. Nonstore retailers were up 6.8% (±1.4%) from last year, while food services and drinking places were up 3.8% (±2.3%) from May 2023.
