After a few months of price yo-yoing Tesla is back with fresh discounts on two of its most expensive models. The electric automaker dropped from #11 to #62 out of 100 in Axios’s recent Top American Brand survey, a substantial reputational hit. The fresh cuts have lead to speculation that the electric automakers new round of price drops is related to trying to regain some ground in the public eye.
The company is offering discounts of around $8,000 on new inventory Model S and Model X vehicles as part of a quarter-end sales push. The discount numbers also match-up with the EV tax credit, available for Tesla buyers of the Model 3 and Model Y. According to Tesla’s website, it charges $82,740 for a brand-new Model S, a discount of $7,500, while Model X is being offered as low as $94,430, down from $102,240.
The automaker has also temporarily brought back free Supercharging, providing three years for Model S and Model X vehicles that are delivered by the end of June. Supercharging for life was a perk given to early buyers of the S and X Models, the program was discontinued in 2018. In April Tesla tried to get owners of older Model S and Model X with “unlimited free Supercharging for life” to give up the perk with a new offer, stating it was an unsustainable perk. A few hundred thousand Tesla vehicles continue to drive the roads with unlimited free Supercharging around the globe.
