General Motors CEO Mary Barra’s bet to make GM a leader in electric vehicle sales, once thought a long shot, might just pay off.

The Cadillac, one of GM’s cornerstone brands, an American icon, is getting electrified.  Cadillac is the first of GM's brands to go all-electric by 2030.

The automaker is off to a good start, G.M opened the order-banks for the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ, an all-electric two-row SUV, on Thursday May 19th at 9 a.m. Four hours later at 1p.m., G.M had sold out of the entire model year.

The company did not provide how many 2023 LYRIQ orders Cadillac received, though earlier in the year G.M told suppliers to prepare to produce 25,000 Lyriqs for the 2023 model year.

“This week marked a historic moment in Cadillac’s journey to an all-electric future as the brand’s first EV went on sale," Cadillac spokesman Mike Albano said in a statement. "Customer demand for the LYRIQ has matched our expectations and we look forward to exceeding their expectations when they take delivery of their LYRIQ." In late March GM started building the LYRIQ at Spring Hill assembly in Tennessee , the automaker will begin shipping the rear-wheel drive models to buyers this summer. The rear-wheel drive LYRIQ will start at $62,990, with 312 miles of range.

Cadillac boss Rory Harvey told reporters on Monday that the next EV rolling off the line will be an EV comparable to the XT4.  Other Cadillac EVs to come include a flagship hand-built sedan called the Celestiq, for which G.M is not providing a launch date. The auto company has plans for a three-row bigger SUV and a full-size SUV that Cadillac has described as Escalade-inspired.
