Over for Good Featured

This business isn't what it used to be. When I started here in 2000, the industry consisted on independent dealers and franchise dealers. About a quarter of all franchise stores lost money on their used-car operations. The superstore model seemed to have failed, with only CarMax left and barely hanging on. But the seeds of change had been sown.

CarMax survived and thrived. Manufacturers and dealers started to invest more and more in their certified programs. The downturn killed off many of those dealers who couldn't sell used. Rental companies expended their retail operations, changing them from suppliers to competitors.

The good times for independent dealers seem over for good.
