Sadly Recommended Reading Featured

I was already going to recommend my most recent reading, Gavin de Becker’s “The Gift of Fear” when it became tragically timely following the workplace violence at a California Ford dealership.

De Becker is a leader in the field of threat response, having advised an array of celebrities and government officials, including creating the security system for the U.S. Supreme Court and working on the O.J. Simpson prosecution. His book looks at ways to protect yourself from bad actors, ranging from total strangers to intimate relations.

There is an entire chapter devoted to employee violence. It sounds like the two men killed at the store unfortunately did the opposite of what de Becker would recommend.

In the book, de Becker says violence prevention starts with hiring. This is true for all manner of threats to your business. I know of at least two dealerships that suffered embezzlements from employees who had embezzled from the previous dealership they worked at. Then there was this recent case in Vermont. I know good help is hard to find, but bad help can be a little too easy.

Given that the worst case of workplace violence ever to occur in Florida happened at a GMAC office, I would put this book on your reading list.
