Peak a Little, Talk a Little Featured

The president of the FX cable channel warns us of the perils of peak TV. Others tell us we’ve passed the point of peak auto. I say that if anybody knew when a peak was, they wouldn’t be telling anybody anything other than telling the manservant on their private island that they want the caviar stuffed lobster for lunch. Take peak auto. Yes, sales were very high two years ago and come down from that point. But there were still lower on a per capita basis than before the recession. And if the U.S. had Canada’s buying rate, we would have sold 18 million new units last year. How does Canada do it? By embracing what we’re told to fear in the use: higher lease penetration and long-term loans. When I was a reporter for my college paper, the school’s golf coach said during an interview, “I’m just talking with words here.” That’s all people who go on about peaks and bubbles are doing.
