Google wants to be good. Or it at least wants to seem good. The company’s motto was “Don’t be evil,” but I always viewed it like this. Others must have felt the same way, because Google changed it to “Do the right thing.” That is open to broader interpretations.One way Google trys to be good is offering free bikes for its employees to use for getting around the Googleplex. The problem, the WSJ tells us, is none employees take the bokes and they wind up in all kinds of places, including atop buildings and at the bottom of a creek. Google is now taking a page from buy-here, pay-here dealers and putting GPS devices on its vehicles.Maybe they should just use their own StreetView. It turns out that provides a lot of information, including some that could have helped the CFPB send out fewer checks to white folks.Google needs to project a positive image, because folks on the left are starting to question its basic foundations. It turns out that Google and Facebook were good in 2008 when the Obama campaign harnessed their power to get out the vote, but today they are bad because the other side won. One idea is for the site to become user-paid rather than ad-paid. Ignore the fact that the genie isn’t going back in the bottle. The real issue is that user-paid is no guarantee companies won’t do both - collect fees and collect data. Uber does both, for just one example.The lesson here is don’t try to present yourself as good, because it only makes your faults more obvious.
