Mitsubishi Recalls Lancers for Air Bags

Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. is recalling 66,001 2004-06 Lancer and Lancer Evolution vehicles and 2004 Lancer Sportback vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion, which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture.Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator with a different inflator, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on Oct. 22. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-17-001. This recall supersedes recall 15V-321.

Nissan North America Inc. is recalling 25,283 2015-2017 Leaf and 2014, 2015 and 2017 Sentra vehicles. Due to a manufacturing error within the air bag inflators, the passenger frontal air bag may not properly deploy in the event of a crash.Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin June 11.

Nissan North America Inc. is recalling 54,751 2012 Nissan Versa vehicles. Degradation of the side impact sensor connector pins may cause the curtain and seat-mounted air bags to deploy unexpectedly if the door is slammed.Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will install a new jumper harness, and replace the side impact satellite sensors, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule.

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling 543,326 2012 Toyota 4Runner, Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Sienna, Yaris, Scion xB, Lexus ES350, GX460, IS-F, IS250, IS350, IS250C, IS350C, and Lexus LFA vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Alabama, California, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico, American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands (Saipan), and the U.S. Virgin Islands, or "Zone A." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A", Toyota is recalling certain 2009 Toyota Corolla, Corolla Matrix, Yaris, Yaris HB, Scion xB, Pontiac Vibe, Lexus, ES350, IS250, IS350, and IS-F vehicles originally sold, or ever registered, in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." Additionally, unless included in "Zone A" or "Zone B", Toyota is recalling certain 2006-08 Lexus IS250 and IS350, 2007-08 Lexus ES350, Toyota Yaris, Yaris HB, and 2008 Lexus IS-F and Scion xB vehicles originally sold, or ever registered in Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling. Toyota will notify the Toyota, Scion and Lexus owners. General Motors will contact the Pontiac owners. Depending on the model, dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator or the air bag assembly, free of charge. Interim letters informing owners that parts are not yet available are expected to begin Jan. 30. Owners will receive a second notice when remedy parts become available. Toyota's numbers for interim notification for this campaign are G1P (Toyota Zone A), G1R (Toyota Zone B), H1A (Toyota Zone C), G2G (Lexus Zone A), G2H (Lexus Zone B) and H2A (Lexus Zone C). Toyota's numbers for final remedy for this campaign are G0P (Toyota Zone A), G0R (Toyota Zone B), H0A (Toyota Zone C), GLG (Lexus Zone A), GLH (Lexus Zone B) and HLA (Lexus Zone C).

Mazda Recalls Cars for Air Bag Issues

Mazda North American Operations is recalling 41,918 model year 2009-10 Mazda6 vehicles manufactured Feb. 4, 2008 to Dec. 3, 2009. The protective coating may not have been properly applied to the air bag control unit and, as a result, moisture may damage the unit causing it to malfunction.Failure of the ACU would illuminate the air bag warning light and prevent the air bags from deploying in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.Mazda dealers will replace the ACU, free of charge. Parts, however, are not currently available. Mazda will send interim notifications to owners beginning Oct. 3 and will mail a second notice when remedy parts are available. Mazda's number for this recall is 9816H.

PSA Features Man Injured by Takata Airbag

A new public service announcement featuring a man named Corey Burdick, who was injured by a recalled Takata airbag, launched on several social media platforms including Facebook and Twitter.  The PSA was created by ConsumerWatch.com and is moderated by Richard Newsome, a consumer advocate and product safety attorney.In the PSA, a disfigured Burdick speaks into the camera stating, “I lost my eye because of a defective airbag … take your car in today so that this doesn’t happen to you.”On May 29, 2014, Burdick was involved in a traffic incident while driving to work in Lake County, Fla. During the incident, the Takata airbag in his 2001 Honda Civic ejected sharp metal shrapnel into his right eye, leaving him disfigured and permanently blind in that eye.Burdick later found out that his Civic had been previously recalled multiple times for the dangerous airbag defect, but he never received notice of the recall.
