Manufacturers Report Expanding Business, Plans to Hire Featured

By Staff Writer July 02, 2019

Manufacturing continues to expand, but at an ever-slower pace.

The June PMI from the Institute for Supply Management registered 51.7 percent, a decrease from the May reading of 52.1 percent. A reading above 50 indicates growth in the manufacturing sector.

This is the 122nd consecutive month of growth as recorded by the PMI.

Employment continued to expand, and at marginally higher levels compared to May. Comments by survey respondents were predominantly ‘pro hire’ in support of capacity expansion, replacing retiring workers and adding summer help. Few comments were in support of hiring freezes and head-count reductions.

The Employment Index rose to 54.5 percent from 53.7 percent in May. An Employment Index above 50.8 percent, over time, is generally consistent with an increase in the Bureau of Labor Statistics data on manufacturing employment.
