More Efficent

The Trump administration is trying to argue that lower fuel efficiency standards will improve safety. They probably won’t. But they might improve fuel efficiency.
How? Like everything else, improving fuel-efficiency comes at a cost. If more fuel efficient new cars cost more than a less efficient used car, fewer people will buy the used car.

“But they’ll save on gas in the long run,” goes counter-argument. True, but that ignores two facts: people don’t think in the long run and people buy the cars they can get financed.
As always, CAFE in general is a dumb idea, at least the way it’s currently done. It promotes SUVs and puts all the burden on manufacturers.
