When the Cheering Stops

Yesterday, the WSj reported that Barnes and Noble ousted its CEO what seems to be #MeToo reasons. The CEO of Intel fell for similar reasons. Or did they? Both companies are struggling in our quickly shifting environment.

In 1971, Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes went berserk over what he considered a bad call in the game against Michigan. He screamed at the ref and destroyed yard markers. The team had played in the Rose Bowl to start the year and barely lost to its archrival in that game.

In 1978, the unranked Buckeyes played in the Gator Bowl. Hayes infamously slapped a player. Hayes was 65 years old and the player was wearing his helmet, so there was little chance of injury. The team had great seasons in ’77 and ’79. But that was the end.

People put up with a lot less when the future is uncertain.
