The Glory That Was Rome

Over the weekend, the kids and I visited an exhibit on the Roman Empire. A part of Rome’s greatness is attributable to their investments in overland transportation. They built tens of thousands of miles of outstanding roads and developed an axel system still used today.

Romans also invented the odometer. It was a combination of gears and pebbles that measure distance traveled so transporters could charge their clients. The first thing I thought after reading this was, “How soon afterward did somebody invent clocking?”
